In honor of Latino Conservation Week, we are hosting the New Mexico premiere of Ay Mariposa. The film’s subjects include: Marianna Trevino Wright, Director of the National Butterfly Center, Zulema Hernandez, a Mexican immigrant and life-long migrant farmworker, and the butterfly, a creature fighting for survival in a landscape where more than 95 percent of its habitat is long gone and much of what remains lies directly in the path of the wall.

Join us for a special screening of Beyond Borders: Tales of Monarcas, Rivers and Two Nations, a documentary film highlighting four Latino leaders throughout the country, whose livelihoods depend on natural resources, like clean air and water. Those natural resources—especially those stemming from the Mississippi River and greater watershed—are in danger from climate change, pollution, overuse, and nature loss. Learn more about the stake Latinos (and monarchs, to whom they are deeply connected) have in the health of the Mississippi River watershed, the threats it faces, and the solutions communities can take part in. The Churchill County Museum, and the Carson City District Bureau of Land Management welcome you to a tour of Hidden Cave. “Hidden Cave” was named because of the difficulty in finding its small opening.Hidden Cave Tours are offered to the public on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month (excluding federal holiday weekends). The Churchill County Museum opens at 9am on these Saturdays, and the tour starts here where you can enjoy the Hidden Cave display at the museum. Participate in a self-guided outdoor story walk based on Ruby’s Birds by Mya Thompson. Ruby is a plucky girl who uncovers the wild side of her city neighborhood with the help of a grown-up friend. Join the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office for a virtual panel discussion. Young, early career Latinx conservationists will explore their personal experiences of diversity in the conservation field and the Chesapeake Bay community.

With the start of the California 30x30 process this year the subject of equity and conservation has come up in several conversations. Like conservation, equity does not have on definition. Equity across the board can have many different meanings and look different in each region and community in the state of California. For this year's Latino Conservation Week, Hispanic Access Foundation will host a panel discussion with representatives from low-income, underserved, underrepresented, BIPOC communities throughout California. Having a conversation around equity and conservation and what that looks like for each region is important to highlight. We cannot have a one-size-fits-all solution. This event will be an open conversation between community members from throughout CA, local elected officials, and agency staff.

Use photography to highlight cultural elements not found in the mainstream conservation narrative with a particular focus on the intersection of the Latinx identity and the natural environment.
3. THE LATINX EXPERIENCE: Photos that contribute to a better representation of all Latinx people, history, and heritage.

HOW TO ENTER:

Each participant may submit up to three photographs per category using this form. Please complete one form per photo and include a Photo Release Form. Photographs may also be submitted as Instagram posts by tagging @latinooutdoors and indicating the contest category in the caption of the IG post (Rethink Outside, Conservation Cultura, or The Latinx Experience). Photos must capture people outdoors locally, either participating in outdoor recreation or conservation efforts. 

REQUIREMENTS:

The fight for historic solutions that match the scale of the climate crisis needs YOU -And getting involved in OUR future has never been more important! Latinos and people of color are disproportionally impacted by the climate crisis, and this film follows four exceptional young women of color—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Varshini Prakash, Rhiana Gunn-Wright, and Alexandra Rojas—as they navigate leadership challenges and fight for our generation's future.

Join us to pick up trash along the trail toward the Jump Creek Waterfall In an effort to help keep our parks and communities clean. We’ll provide trash bags, gloves and trash pickers as well as light snacks and water.

The West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) invites you to the 16th Annual Mayors’ Grand River Cleanup on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 8:30AM to 1:00PM at Sixth Street Park in Grand Rapids, MI. Join over 1,000 volunteers as they cleanup 30 miles of the Grand River in 5 West Michigan Communities – Grand Rapids, Grandville, Walker, Wyoming, and Plainfield Township. Participants will travel to sites courtesy of Dean Transportation to pull thousands of pounds of trash and recycling from along river banks and storm drains and return for a celebration that includes live music, lunch, and a beer garden featuring Founders Brewing and Cascade Blonde (21+ for beer garden and ID required). All ages are welcome for this family-friendly event! Sign-up as an individual or as a team of family and friends. Groups, organizations, and businesses can also register a team. The Lotus and Water Lily Festival is an annual event that celebrates global culture in the wild wetlands of Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. At this free family fun celebration, visitors enjoy cultural exhibitors, hands-on activities, lotus tea tasting, traditional Latin, Asian and African performances and the spectular lotus and water lilies in full bloom! This year’s theme is “Culture, Nature and Community” and we will celebrate the Year of the Anacostia while highlighting the various aspects of culture, nature and communities connected to the Anacostia River, which borders Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.

Join Wasatch Community Gardens (WCG) and Artes de México en Utah for a workshop from our joint Sabores de Mi Patria program: ¡Somos lo que comemos: La Milpa / We are what we eat: La Milpa.

We will share valuable cultural knowledge about La Milpa and the Three Sisters through the analysis of the cosmological system of understanding the social relations with nature through the significance that corn and her “sisters” has for the indigenous people.

This workshop will increase participants' understanding and appreciation of the cultural legacy of Milpa and The Three Sisters (which are both traditional systems of growing corn, beans, and squash) as symbols of indigenous identity.

The event will be held at the Wasatch Community Gardens' Campus (629 E. 800 S., SLC). The presentation will be given in Spanish and English. Seating will be limited (though standing room will be available), and water will be provided. Expected program length is 1 hour.

Compartiremos valiosos conocimientos culturales sobre La Milpa y las Tres Hermanas a través del análisis del sistema cosmológico de comprensión de las relaciones sociales con la naturaleza a través del significado que tiene el maíz y sus “hermanas” para los indígenas.

Este taller aumentará la comprensión y la apreciación de los participantes del legado cultural de Milpa y Las Tres Hermanas (que son sistemas tradicionales de cultivo de maíz, frijoles y calabaza) como símbolos de la identidad indígena.

Then and Now: Latino Outdoors and Latino Conservation Week are celebrating 10 years of growth, learning, community, and movement building. Celebrate Tahoe’s Black Bears!

**Visit the California State Parks booth to speak with Spanish-language bear specialists**

Tahoe Bear Fest connects wildlife experts, land managers, and community groups for a day of discovery. Visitors will enjoy:

• Interactive booths & demonstrations led by wildlife professionals and partner organizations (see below).
• Presentations on bear biology, safety, and behavior, running every 30 minutes from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the amphitheater. Bear Storytime from the Zephyr Cove Library will happen at 1:00 P.M.
• Guided “Bear Walk” hikes along the Spooner Lake Trail at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, led by Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space. Exploring bear biology, behaviors, and habitat.
• Nevada State Parks Foundation will serve hot dogs and hamburgers (available for a small donation) while supplies last.
• Hands-on activities for all ages.

Tahoe Interagency Bear Team (TahoeBears.org) is a partnership between the United States Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, Nevada Department of Wildlife, and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Mile Dwelling is a hike up the West Fork of the Gila River. One of the segments being proposed for Wild & Scenic Designation. This hike is intermediate with numerous river crossings and beautiful scenery. Snacks and drinks for the hike will be provided. Participants are asked to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and shoes you don't mind getting wet. We ask that all participants meet at The Silver City Visitors Center at 8 am. The drive is approx. 1.5 hours to the trailhead.

I Love A Clean San Diego has served as the official organizer of Coastal Cleanup Day in San Diego County since it was founded in 1985. The event is a major part of International Coastal Cleanup, which is facilitated by The Ocean Conservancy and includes many U.S. states and territories and over 70 countries. In California, data is reported to the California Coastal Commission to be funneled into the world’s largest marine database. You are joining hundreds of thousands of volunteers all over the world to remove pollution from our ecosystems!

In San Diego County, I Love a Clean San Diego organizes Coastal Cleanup Day with support from the California Coastal Commission, who organizes this effort statewide. This is all part of the greater International Coastal Cleanup that's led by the Ocean Conservancy. Volunteers are invited to grab buckets and work gloves and make a difference in our San Diego region!

WHAT TO EXPECT: A site captain will be ready to check you in on site. After a short orientation and safety talk you will be sent off to remove litter around the area! The site captain(s) will be in charge of sorting and disposing of the collected litter and after the cleanup you can request community service verification in your Community Hub dashboard.

SUPPLIES: Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes, some form of sun protection (sunscreen or a hat) and bring a water bottle or two! Help make this cleanup as Earth-friendly as possible by bringing sustainable supplies from home check out our Sustainable Cleanup Supply Guide in the attachments below. The site captain(s) will be providing trash bags and disposable gloves if you do not have your own supplies!

WAIVERS: This event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers, and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a guardian. Please download and print the waiver below, sign, and bring with you to this cleanup. No printer? No problem! We will have waivers at check-in for volunteers. If you are under 18 please have your guardian check-in with us at the cleanup to sign-off on your participation.

LITTER DATA: Please download the Clean Swell App on your phone BEFORE arriving to the cleanup. As you collect litter, you will note how much of each type of litter you picked up. We encourage you all to pick up in teams, with one person as the citizen scientist recording the data! This is important for us to track trends over time, areas in need and create more targeted educational material.

WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY: Our events are rain or shine! If it is raining on your cleanup day, we recommend rain boots, a raincoat and a towel to dry off afterwards.

Join us during Latino Conservation Week for our 4th Saturday Habitat Restoration project at Struve Slough on Saturday, July 22nd from 9am to 12pm. We will meet at Hope Park (76 Hope Dr., Watsonville) and restore wetland habitat by removing invasive plants. The event will include a presentation on native plants and their uses by native peoples. 

This project is part of an on-going project to restore Struve Slough and develop environmental infrastructure in the wetlands and surrounding neighborhood in partnership with the City of Watsonville and grant funders including the Ocean Protection Council.

Join us for a 5 mile hike in Redwood National and State Parks. This event will be a guided ranger hike through old growth redwood forest through the James Irvine trail leading up to Fern Canyon. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15. It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, and diversity of the Hispanic/Latino community.

This unique event features tabling activities hosted by our partners, free tacos, refreshments, music, a performance by Grupo Folklorico Los Laureles, and an optional gentle 2-mile hike to a scenic overlook. Everyone is welcome! Come and celebrate with us.

Things to note:

• Entrance, parking & food are free to registered attendees.

Join Wilderness Workshop, Defiende Nuestra Tierra, and the Aspen Art Museum to celebrate Latino Conservation Week through a photography workshop. During this workshop we will be exploring the interconnectedness between place based conservation and Latino identity, through the lens of our phone cameras. We will be practicing storytelling, talking identity and how it all fits into local landscapes and conservation efforts, all with the expert guidance from Defiende Nuestra Tierra and Aspen Art Museum representatives.

This is a free, guided and bilingual event. We encourage all participants to come as their full self and celebrate their culture as we dive deep into exploring the translational landscape of Lake Christine, where wildfires affected our day to day life in the Roaring Fork Valley a couple years ago.

LatinasRepresent, an initiative of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), is proud to partner with GreenLatinos to host "A Conversation with Latina Environmental Justice Champions" during Latino Conservation Week 2021 to celebrate Latina leadership and inspire more Latinas to pursue careers at the intersection of public policy and environmental justice.

Latinas have historically been underrepresented in the conservation field. Yet, despite a myriad of challenges Latinas have done and continue to do incredible work to create healthier and safer communities for us all.

During this conversation, we will learn how Latina environmental justice advocates got their start in the field, why this work is important to them, and what you can do to make a difference in your communities.

A vibrant, inclusive, and educational one-day event aimed at fostering community bonds and raising awareness about climate change and recent immigration laws. The event will feature fun activities, delicious food, lively music, and educational workshops. It will be an opportunity to celebrate immigrant culture and impediments, educate the community on important cultural and environmental issues, and promote sustainable living practices.

MNDNR will be hosting Centro Guadalupano and their members at Fort Snelling State Park for a day of fishing and other outdoor activities! We will be geocaching, hiking, learning about the significant Bdote history in the park, learning about plants, going on a photo scavenger hunt, learning outdoor survival, etc. It will be a day to appreciate nature and the great resources we have right in the Twin Cities!

Participants will learn about a unique group of birds called insectivores, the many ways they help humans, and what we can do to provide them with a home where they can thrive.

Join Virginia Ansaldi, Shley Suarez-Burgos, and local herpetologist, Sean Liz, as they take you on a guided hunt for invasive pythons through the Everglades.

Join Latino Conservation Week Lead Ambassadors, Shley Suarez-Burgos & Virginia Ansaldi alongside local artist, Angela Portillo, for a plein air event at Crandon Park. Learn about the history and coastal environment of Crandon Park while local artist, Angela Portillo, guides participants in landscape painting. All art materials will be provided. Bug spray, water bottles, and chairs are recommended to bring. Registration is required for this free event. Please register each adult interested. Angela Portillo is a contemporary artist who works with mixed media. Through her assimilation of different textures, colors, even line objects, she captures a scenery through each of her artworks that redirects her to a specific moment in time.

Latino Conservation Week was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. Crandon Park is one of seven heritage parks acquired by Miami-Dade County. With amenities such as Crandon Gardens, Biscayne Nature Center, a marina, golf course and tennis center, Crandon Park is visited by locals and tourists who enjoy the many recreational opportunities afforded.

Hispanic Access Foundations Interns at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge plan to engage Groundwork Elizabeth youth with the environment by exposing them to wildlife and its’ surroundings. These interns will host around 15 to 20 urban youth by educating them with live birds from the Raptor Trust following up with a bird watch. After lunch, the interns will proceed with an educational presentation about Julia Carabias Lillo, a Mexican Ecologist and Environmentalist then will follow up with a special showing of the documentary Leche y Miel. The event with close off with an hour of archery.

Abrazando la naturaleza: La naturaleza como inspiración en un equilibrio emocional y desarrollo de liderazgo. Abrazando la naturaleza es un evento público digirido a la mujer hispana, creando un espacio seguro y acogedor donde las mujeres puedan conectar consigo mismas, con la naturaleza, asi como crear un ambiente de convivencia que ayude en el fortalecimiento de su autoestima y en el desarrollo de su liderazgo con su familia y su comunidad. 

Se llevará a cabo en diferentes actividades durante la semana de conservación latina, empezaremos con una actividad familiar donde celebraremos la riqueza de la cultura hispana ofreciendo una variedad de entretenimientos tales como musica en vivo, comida, actividades de arte y rifa. Posteriormete ofeceremos dos talleres en el que aprenderemos a fortalecer los lazos familiares con actividades divertidas y conversaciones que traen unidad. Dentro de estas pláticas brindaremos un espacio para que las mujeres se conceten con su esencia, con su propósito y se empoderen para ser agentes de cambios positivos en su nucleo familiar y en su comunidad. Asi mismo, llevaremos a cabo una caminata en el que podrán disfrutar de la compañía de otras mujeres mientras conversan de hábitos que cambiarán su vida y su salud.

As the nation faces the latest in what represents a foundational history of Black death and egregious violence by the police, sanctioned and perpetuated by the state, conversations are being held in our own communities. This work is specifically crucial for the Latinx community, one which, while grappling with its own painful and traumatic relationship with the effects of colonialism, witnessing and experiencing anti-Black racism is all too common. There is always room to grow, to learn, and there’s plenty of impactful work you can do, starting in your everyday life. Let’s dig in.

Speaker Bio: Thalía is an Afro-Indigena healer by lineage, educator, Earth worker, and defender of the People. Born and raised in Coloraztlan (Apache, Ute, Arapaho, Cheyenne territory), identity has been a journey of rediscovery, reclaiming, and decolonizing. As a person of mixed race, Thalía considers herself a bridge between her two communities (Black and Brown) and steps in to address, challenge, and heal lateral violence and conflict between these communities. A teacher and activist, Thalía is honored and humbled to share knowledge and hold space for others who are challenging colonial structures, perspectives, and systems. Thalía strongly believes that healing and education are equal parts to the liberation of our people and to the overall health/harmony of our planet, Pachamama. “It is an honor and privilege to be of service to mi gente and to bare witness to the journey of freeing ourselves of the chains of generational/ancestral oppression.”

We will be having a hike Sunday July 23rd starting at 9am. Followed by a lunch, games and a planting station where we will be planting some seeds so our guests can take them home. We are excited about this event as it allows us to plant the seed of the Gospel as well.

In honor of Latino Conservation Week, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument will be hosting a bilingual workshop on adobe brick-making on Friday, July 20, 2018. This hands on activity will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will run through 2:00 p.m. outside of the Visitor Center. Stop by, get your hands dirty and learn about some of the natural materials used for centuries to build pre-historic and historic homes and buildings!

Adopt the block is all about cleaning up our streets and neighborhoods. It's about becoming good stewards of God's creation on earth. We will be going out this day just right around our streets with trash pickers sticks trash bags and our personal protective gear. And picking up and disposing properly of our garbage on the streets. This promotes good stewardship as well as exercising for all our young people and their parents. The task is to go and show love to their cities to their neighbors and doing what the bible talks about being the golden rule to do to others what you would have then done unto you.
